- The
what Republic?
The Czech Republic came into being on the first of January 1993 after
the peaceful separation of the former Republic of Czechoslovakia.
- Isnīt
that near Russia / Yugoslavia / Rumania (Insert name of appropriate
world trouble spot)?
In fact, the Czech Republic lies right in the " Heart of Europe" and
shares borders with Germany & Austria.
- Are
there not bombs and spies everywhere?
Itīs true that the production of semtex took place here, but no shots
have been fired in anger here since 1945 and the only bombs you will
hear about are in the Czech phrase " Bomba " , which means something
excellent. As for the spies, leave them to John Le Carre.
- Is
it right that their are long queues for food?
A myth. Queues are no longer than in your local Tescoīs with modern
supermarkets ,where western brands share shelf space with locally
produced goods. Or, if you prefer, your local corner shop or " Potraviny
" can provide for your everyday needs at very reasonable prices. By
the way, there are branches of Tescoīs in the Czech Republic as well.
- Is
it safe to drink the water ?
Definiately. But if your tastes run to bottle water, the Czechīs can
offer some of the best in the world. It is this water that ensures
that Czech beers are outstanding. A way of life for Czech people,
their beer is a consistent award winner of excellent quality. Incidently
Pilsner or Pils lager originated in the Czech city of Plzen in the
19th century and this is still produced there today.
- No
Guiness or Draught Bass then ?
Yes, you can get those here too, and at much lower prices than in
Britain, although most drinkers regard Czech brews as far superior.
- Are
the locals friendly ?
Certainly. As a vistor you will be treated with courtesy, and perhaps
a certain level of formality. Czechs are often very interested to
hear what other people think of their country.
- What
else should I beware of ?
Pickpockets, especially in trams or railway stations. Taxis - donīt
even think about getting into one. And " slivovice " , a plum brandy
with a knockout punch !
- So
why should I go there ?
For a unique experience in a country which few people know about.
Are you into architecture ? Our base in Karlovy Vary was described
by Le Corbursier as : " A festival of cakes ". Culture ? Czech music
is renowned throughout the world e.g. Antonin Dvorak, whose new world
symphony is synonymous with Hovis bread. And the Czech president is
a playwrite. Economics ? Come and see the effects of an economy in
transition between communism and capitalism, and decide for yourself
- economic miracle or cooking the books?Geology ? Health ? History
? Whatever your interests, there is something for you here. But we
know that you are on holiday, and the main thing we have discovered
is that the Czechs know how to have a good time !
- Who
is KV KONTO ? A small group of young people, Czechs, English,
South Africans who aim to provide quality holidays for a reasonable
price. All our guides speak English, many are students themselves
and their inside knowledge will save you time, money and unnecessary
hassle..
